Province looking at adjustments to blue box program
More changes are coming to the blue box program in Ontario.
The program became industry run and funded this year, but has been impacted by rising operating costs caused by the U.S. tariffs
The province is now looking at changes that allow for contracts to be adjusted to reflect surprising fees, costs or operational changes.
“Our government is committed to a Blue Box system that ensures Ontario’s small- and medium-sized businesses have the tools they need to forecast and manage their costs more effectively,” states Todd McCarthy, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, in a release.
“By bringing greater transparency and accountability to the program, these measures will help deliver more predictability and more sustainability for the long term – while ensuring that producers, and not taxpayers, remain responsible for the waste they create.”
The government is also exploring having a new administrator taking over.
Circular Materials, a national non-profit organization, was appointed program administrator last December.
