Atikokan gives thanks to local doctors

Atikokan is one of the few communities where access to a family physician has not been an issue.

The community of about 3,000 boasts of having seven doctors.

Monday, town council recognized them ahead of National Doctors’ Day on May 1st.

Mayor Rob Ferguson credits them for helping with recruitment and retention efforts.

“They are the best ambassadors that we could ask for,” says Ferguson.

“The way they support one another and the environment they have created made Atikokan an attractive place to practice medicine. That kind of stability is important in a small town, and it makes a real difference for the people who rely on their services.”

Ferguson singled out Dr. Joanne Spencer and Dr. Sarah Van der Loo in particular.

He notes both were instrumental in maintaining services and recruitment several years ago when access to a physician was limited.

“Their dedication and commitment helped sustain healthcare services in Atikokan during a very challenging period, and their efforts laid the groundwork for where we are today.”

Ferguson says Atikokan is the envy of others who have fewer physicians and struggle with recruitment.

Jennifer Learning, Chief Executive Officer and President of Atikokan Health and Community Services, also applauded the commitment of the local physicians.

“Over the past 14 years, I’ve had the honour of working alongside many of you and witnessing firsthand the evolution of physician care in our community,” Learning said in addressing the group.

“I’ve seen us move through periods of stability, times of significant challenge with reliance on local coverage, and ultimately a return to a strong and committed physician complement. Through each of these phases, one constant has remained, your unwavering dedication to the people that we serve.”

Other staff members at the Atikokan clinic were also recognized by the town.
