Fort Frances recognizes Pride month

The Pride Flag is flying over the Fort Frances Civic Centre.

It was raised Friday morning to recognize Pride Month in the community.

Mayor Andrew Hallikas says it is a show of support for the local Pride movement.

“By participating in this Pride flag raising, we are showing our community that we are proud of Pride and that we welcome and support members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and their families,” says Hallikas.

We are demonstrating with our actions the importance of unity, acceptance and love. This flag is a testament to the resilience and courage of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. It is a reminder that every individual has the right to live authentically and without fear of discrimination.”

Hallikas points to south of the border and the actions of President Donald Trump toward diversity, equity and inclusion, and the need to do more to ensure vulnerable and marginalized individuals are treated fairly and with respect.

“Raising this flag contributes to raising awareness of the fact that there are those in our communities who continue to be unfairly targeted with hatred and violence. This must stop,” says Hallikas.

He says it is also a call to action to ensure every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, can live with dignity and respect.

With the flag-raising, Hallikas read a proclamation encouraging all residents to work together on equality, acceptance, and inclusion of all people throughout the year.
