RCMP warn of emerging gold scam
RCMP are warning about a scam that is gaining traction where victims are tricked into converting money into gold, then giving that gold to scammers posing as police.
Police say victims are contacted by a scammer who is pretending to be with the fraud department of a major bank in Canada and that their money is at risk from foreign hackers.
Victims are then told to purchase gold from a legitimate online dealer in Canada using their savings, then to give to a police officer for “safekeeping”.
The scammers meet with the victims with fake police badges and take the gold.
There have instances of this scam in other parts of Canada with one reported in Nova Scotia. The scammers produced fake ID’s but did not have uniforms or police vehicles.
“Police will not take financial instruments from people for safekeeping, just as banks will never ask you to remove your money from your accounts and use it to purchase something else,” says Cpl. Mitch Thompson of the Commercial Crime Section.
RCMP say that if you hear from your bank and are wary of what they are telling you, hang up and call your local branch on next steps.
