Individual reportedly jumps to safety during Halifax fire

A dramatic scene in Halifax at an Oxford Street fire.

Firefighters quickly arrived after reports at around 10:52 p.m. on Friday of a structure on fire and an individual trapped inside.

The Halifax Professional Firefighters Association stated in a social media post that when members from South End Station 2 arrived, they found a fire in a two-storey multi-residential building.

The individual had reportedly jumped from a second-floor window before firefighters arrived. There’s no word on their condition.

The association says the fire was contained and under control within minutes.

There’s no word yet on a cause.

This was the first of four significant incidents that the fire union says their members responded to. There were three on Saturday night all in a span of 40 minutes.

It was late Saturday night on Lakecrest Drive in Dartmouth when several vehicles were on fire with flames that threatened a nearby building until it was brought under control.

About 20 minutes later, crews were called to a basement fire at a three-storey residential building on Sylvia Avenue in Spryfield, which crews quickly contained.

Then at about 10:40 p.m., firefighters responded to a HAZMAT call due to a chemical odour at a high rise on Spring Garden Road, requiring resources from Lakecrest Drive.

The source was in a parkade.

“Three emergencies. Multiple communities. Resources stretched across the municipality,” says the fire union.
