Heat warning to persist into Monday for some areas

,

It’s going to continue to be very hot and sticky for the next two days.

The system blanketed most of the province Wednesday afternoon.

Environment Canada has now continued the heat warning and say temperatures that feel closer to 40 will remain into the weekend.

However, some areas in the southwest may see the hot weather persist into Monday.

The forecaster says there will be little relief overnight with lows of 17 to 20 degrees.

Environment Canada says to follow the advice of public health.

Extreme heat coming to New Brunswick

, ,

The southern half of New Brunswick is under a heat warning.

Environment Canada issued the yellow-level warning Tuesday.

According to the forecast, a hot and humid air mass is expected to move through the region Wednesday, bringing temperatures up to 33 degrees before the humidex.

With the humidex, it could feel like 36 to 39 degrees.

Nighttime lows are also forecast to stay warm for eastern areas of the province, providing little to no relief.

Temperatures and humidex values are expected to be lower by Saturday, though some areas could see warning-level conditions continue.

Environment Canada is advising people to protect themselves from extreme heat, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people.

Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and others. Signs may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. Stop your activity and drink water.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 or your emergency health provider if you, or someone around you, is showing signs of heat stroke which can include red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion and change in consciousness.

While you wait for medical attention, try to cool the person by moving them to a cool place, removing extra clothing, applying cold water or ice packs around the body.

Drink water often and before you feel thirsty to replace fluids.

Close blinds, or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside.

Turn on air conditioning, use a fan, or move to a cooler area of your living space. If your living space is hot, move to a cool public space such as a cooling centre, community centre, library or shaded park.

Follow the advice of your region’s public health authority.

Plan and schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day.

Limit direct exposure to the sun and heat. Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat.

Never leave people, especially children, or pets inside a parked vehicle. Check the vehicle before locking to make sure no one is left behind.

Heat warning for nearly all of Nova Scotia

,

Hot and sticky weather is on the way for the majority of Nova Scotia.

Environment Canada says the heat is expected for the entire mainland. It will begin Wednesday afternoon and continue through Friday, and possibly into the weekend for some counties.

The weather agency says daytime highs will reach near 32 degrees, but with the humidity it will be closer to 38.

According to the warning, “A hot and humid air mass is expected to move into the region Wednesday afternoon, bringing a period of persistently high daytime temperatures and elevated Humidex values. Nighttime lows are also forecast to stay warm, providing little to no relief.”

Jill Maepea, Meteorologist with Environment Canada says, “it is expected that inland areas of the mainland will feel the impact more due to a southwesterly breeze expected along the coastline.”

She says heat warnings don’t affect the majority of people but vulnerable members of the public, such as the elderly or those with respiratory issues, may be largely impacted.

“Many people may not recognize the symptoms of heat stroke which can come on quickly in the heat,” says Maepea.

Officials are urging Nova Scotians to take precautions as prolonged heat can pose serious health risks.

Heat warnings continue across northwestern Ontario as daytime temps soar

, , ,

A heat warning remains in effect for parts of northwestern Ontario as hot and humid conditions continue through Thursday.

Environment Canada says the yellow level warning shows that daytime highs will reach 29 to 31 C, with humidex values ranging from 33 to 38. Warm overnight temperatures will provide little relief, and some areas could see the heat linger into Friday.

Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and check in on older adults and other vulnerable people. Meteorologists also warn that air quality could deteriorate as the heat continues.

Heat warning remains in effect for Fort Frances

,

A heat warning remains in place for Fort Frances as hot and humid weather continues.

Environment Canada reported that the conditions are expected to last until late Monday.

The agency said daytime temperatures are forecast to reach about 29 degrees Celsius, with overnight lows near 18 degrees.

The warm and humid air could also lead to deteriorating air quality, with the air quality health index approaching the high‑risk category.

Environment Canada is reminding residents to check on older adults, people living alone and others who may be more vulnerable to heat‑related illness.

The agency added that early signs of heat exhaustion can include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue.

Anyone showing these symptoms is advised to stop activity, move to a cool place and drink water.

Residents are encouraged to drink water often, keep indoor spaces cool and limit direct sun exposure.

Environment Canada also advises planning outdoor activities for cooler parts of the day and wearing lightweight, light‑coloured clothing and a wide‑brimmed hat.

N.B. faces high temps, humidity for second day in a row

New Brunswick continues to feel the heat on Friday.

A yellow-level heat warning remains in effect for most of the province, with just the Fundy coast spared the highest of temperatures.

Environment Canada’s forecast predicts temperatures between 30 and 34 degrees around the province.

Those temperatures rise to 36 to 40 once the humidex is taken into account.

Humidex values of 40 or higher are expected for most of New Brunswick between 2 and 7 p.m. Friday.

Conditions are forecast to ease from north to south on Saturday, but southern New Brunswick could still feel high temperatures and humidity until later in the day.

Cooler conditions can be expected along parts of the Fundy coast.

Environment Canada is advising people to protect themselves from the heat, and to check on vulnerable members of the population.

Watch for the early signs of heat exhaustion, including headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and intense fatigue. If you experience those symptoms, stop what you’re doing and drink water.

Heat warning in effect as temperatures in N.S. spike to +30°C

, , , , , ,

Temperatures are expected to soar in parts of Nova Scotia, Tuesday, with our first heat warning of the season.

It includes Lunenburg County, Queens County, and the Annapolis Valley.

Highs near 30 degrees are expected Tuesday afternoon but will feel like 35; and the heat is set to persist into Wednesday.

Environment Canada Meterologist Ian Hubbard tells us it’s the first heat wave of this nature in Nova Scotia for the month of May, since they changed the criteria in 2018.

“We look for two consecutive days of temperature reaching 29 degrees or more,” says Hubbard. “We also have an overnight temperature in there and it has to stay above 16.”

Hubbard says, they also look at humidex value.

“If we see consecutive days of the humidex reaching 36 or higher, we would issue a heat warning for that as well,” explains Hubbard.

As for the Halifax area, temperatures will peak at 24 degrees Tuesday and 30 degrees Wednesday – not quite high enough for a warning.

Conditions may be slightly cooler along coastal areas.

The forecaster encourages to watch for signs of heat exhaustion that may include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, and intense fatigue.
