N.S. premier rips into Trump’s comments on Canada’s ties with EU
Strong words from the premier of Nova Scotia for Donald Trump after the president of the United States called Canada’s strengthening ties with the European Union (EU) ‘laughable’.
In a statement on social media, Thursday morning, Tim Houston said Trump has a “next level fear of missing out”.
“He has an option: stop being a bully and maybe you’ll get invited back to the party.”
The exchange follows a visit from Prime Minister Mark Carney to Europe. Canada was in France to strengthen trade ties with the EU and was offered to become the first associate member.
Carney said we are looking for partnerships that reinforce our sovereignty.
“Nobody is going to tell us what language we speak, nobody is going to dictate our culture or with whom we can strike agreements internally,” said Carney.
Trump responded by telling reporters on his way to North Carolina that he may implement more tariffs if Europe makes a deal with Canada with “bad intentions.”
Tensions between Canada and the U.S. have been very high after a trade deal with America tanked last month. It ignited a trade war with 50 per cent tariffs on a slew of products that Ottawa has matched dollar for dollar.
