Crown pushes for life in prison after bomb threat to U.S. Consulate in Halifax
There could be a much steeper charge for the 54-year-old man who’s been arrested in the connection with the bomb threat toward the U.S. Consulate in Halifax.
According to Global News, the Crown prosecutor is looking for a maximum penalty for life in prison for Ali Assakereh, up from 14 years.
It’s due to a new charge laid last week, threatening an internationally protected person, defined by the Canada Criminal Code as a terrorism offence.
It’s in addition to other offences including uttering threats and public mischief.
It was August 9 when police say they were made aware of the threat. Askakereh’s vehicle was found in the Purdy’s Wharf parkade with a propane tank and flammable liquid.
This prompted a large portion of downtown Halifax to be evacuated.
The bail hearing is set for Friday.
