The Québec Remparts will host the 2028 Memorial Cup.
The Canadian Hockey League made the announcement Thursday.
“The Remparts and their partners presented a compelling vision backed by a passionate hockey community and proven experience hosting major events,” said CHL president Dan MacKenzie.
“We look forward to delivering an exceptional championship for players and fans while celebrating the city’s hockey heritage and honouring the Memorial Cup’s military roots.”
QMJHL commissioner Mario Cecchini said he’s confident Québec will put together an outstanding event.
“Québec City is a flagship market for the QMJHL and for all of Canada,” Cecchini said.
Remparts vice-president of operations Tommy Castonguay said the organization is pleased to have been chosen.
“Over the past several months, we have worked tirelessly to build a strong bid and were confident in our ability to meet all the requirements,” Castonguay said.
He added that during the selection committee’s recent visit, the team was able to show it would be more than a hockey tournament.
“It would also bring the entire community together through a variety of activities, not to mention the attractions our beautiful Québec City has to offer the teams and visitors attending the tournament,” Castonguay said.
Wildcats express pride in community effort
Moncton Wildcats president R.J. Irving said it’s disappointing to miss out on hosting the tournament, but the city of Moncton and province of New Brunswick stepped up during the bid process.
“I have never been more proud to be from this community,” Irving said in a statement.
“Throughout the process, everyone demonstrated the East Coast hospitality that defines who we are.”
Moncton’s bid centred on that hospitality, as well the Avenir Centre and the city’s walkable downtown.
The Wildcats also expressed gratitude for the efforts to recognize the legacy of Robert K. Irving and his commitment to the organization and community.
“This bid reflected my father’s passion for the Moncton Wildcats and his belief in what hockey can do for a community,” the younger Irving said.
“We felt the extra effort everyone made to honour my dad and his legacy in supporting the bid.”
Memorial Cup has long history in Québec City
Québec City has a long-standing connection to the Memorial Cup.
The original incarnation of the Remparts captured the title in 1971.
Before the current version of the Remparts arrived in 1997, they were the Beauport Harfangs. Beauport is a suburb of Québec City.
That team hosted the tournament in 1991 at Colisée Pepsi, though did not participate.
The Remparts hosted the tournament in 2003 and again in 2015.
The revived version of the team has won the Memorial Cup twice, in 2006 and most recently in 2023.
