Several monuments, plaques stolen in N.S. in recent weeks

There has been a string of monument and plaque thefts in Nova Scotia in recent weeks.

RCMP say on October 23 two plaques were reported stolen from monuments at a provincial park on Station Road in Londonberry. Both are about 2×1 feet and have information about the mining history in the area.

They are believed to have been taken in early October.

In addition to that, officers also learned on October 23 that a plaque had been stolen from a monument at a provincial park on MacElmon Road in Lower Onslow. This one has information about conservation efforts that support waterfowl habitat in the area.

This theft is believed to have happened within the last three months.

Both park sites are maintained by the department of natural resources.

These thefts are on top of the brass plaque that was stolen near Harry Elliott Road in Lower Onslow around September 17.

Officers are aware that plaques or other historical metal items may be stolen and sold as scrap metal.

“It is disappointing to consider that these links to our cultural history are likely being stolen and possibly destroyed for this reason,” says Cst. Quinn Wall, Colchester County District RCMP. “We want to hear from anyone with information, including scrap dealers who may have awareness of these or other missing items.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Colchester County District RCMP at 902-893-6820.
