NSLC agency store in Jeddore well received 1 year after corporate store closed: MLA

, , , ,

The MLA for the eastern shore says the new NSLC agency store in Jeddore has been well received one year after the corporate store closed.

Jeddore Variety now offers alcohol products and according to Kent Smith, it is not an inexpensive endeavor.

“Really happy and proud of Paul Wolf for stepping up,” says Smith. “Paul’s store is kind of famous locally as the local PaulMarts.”

He says the store as a wonderful array of products and believes the Paul was happy to be able to take this on.

Store closes

It was last summer when the only NSLC in the community abruptly shut down due to a dispute with the landlord regarding upgrades and safety concerns.

The store had been around for nearly 40 years. The closure meant residents had to travel further away to get their products, until now.

“I had a number of people reach out who were [making] the drive to Porter’s Lake to pick up alcohol” says Smith.

Smith adds, another agency store is likely to pop up in Musquodoboit Harbour as well.

Mixed feelings from Nova Scotians about U.S. booze hitting store shelves

, , , , ,

Nova Scotians seem to have mixed feelings about whether they will buy American alcohol if it is put back on store shelves.

Amid recent intense trade talks with the U.S., Prime Minister Mark Carney has asked all the premiers to restock American liquor in good faith, once a deal is finalized.

The products were taken off more than a year ago after Trump implemented tariffs. But now that it looks like they could be available again soon, not everyone is keen to purchase them.

Outside the NSLC in Yarmouth, about half of those Acadia News spoke to, won’t be buying alcohol from our neighbours to the south.

“Nope, probably not,” said one customer. “Why buy it? I can stick to what’s local, Canadian.”

Another said, “Never. [But] if we got rid of who we have over there, I sure would.”

However, others were open to more options.

“I love bourbon. I wouldn’t probably by the bourbon,” said one man. “But I don’t mind that it’s not there now.”

One was even a little indifferent.

“It honestly doesn’t make a difference to me,” said another customer.

Meantime, Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has his own message for Canadians.

“If we put the booze back on the shelves, don’t buy it, let it sit on the shelf where the liquor mart employees will be putting it and buy the Canadian stuff instead,” said Kinew.

Meetings on a trade deal continue between our two countries.

U.S. alcohol sales bring in more than expected for Nova Scotia food programs

,

Sales of U.S. alcohol have brought in more money than expected for food relief efforts across Nova Scotia.

The province says $5.3 million is being distributed through the Feeding Communities Fund, up from the $4 million originally forecast.

The funding is going to 315 non-profits and charities that run food programs in communities across the province, helping people access safe, nutritious food.

The money comes from the province’s decision to sell off remaining U.S. alcohol inventory. Those products were initially pulled from Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation shelves in response to U.S. tariffs tied to trade tensions.

Rather than keep the inventory off the market, the province chose to sell it and direct the proceeds to community food organizations.

Funding is being distributed to groups in urban, rural and Mi’kmaw communities, including both established organizations and smaller local initiatives.
