Speeds on Kenora’s Rabbit Lake Rd. remain a concern
Kenora City Council will discuss further measures on Tuesday to slow traffic down on Rabbit Lake Road.
The town reduced the speed limit on a portion of the road in September 2024.
A Community Safety Zone was also established between the 300 block to Valley Drive in response to concerns.
Rabbit Lake Road is heavily used by motorists, as well as by pedestrians and bicyclists, because a lack of sidewalks forces them onto the narrow road.
Despite the measures taken in 2024, a report to council notes that speeding remains a concern.
City administration outlines several measures that could be considered to slow traffic down, recommending speed feedback signs.
The signs capture a vehicle’s speed as it approaches and flash it back to make the driver aware.
“Speed feedback signs represent a practical and cost-effective measure to encourage speed
compliance while maintaining roadway functionality,” states a report to council.
Administration adds that increased enforcement is the most impactful option to slow traffic, but admits resources may not always be available to support targeted initiatives along the corridor.
Council members will discuss the issue at their Committee of the Whole meeting.
