About 2,000 customers in the Moncton area have had their power restored after a switch failed inside a substation.
NB Power said the outage began around noon Thursday and at one point affected about 11,000 customers from Moncton up toward Bouctouche.
Phil Landry, NB Power’s acting vice-president of operations, said the outage was caused by a switch that broke apart while crews were doing routine maintenance.
He said the failure left the equipment in an unsafe position and forced crews to shut the power off.
“One of the phases actually fell apart while they were operating the switch, so it was just sort of hanging there,” Landry said.
“It would almost be like having a switch at your home partially on and partially off, and we certainly don’t want to be in that state.”
Landry said the shutdown was necessary to protect workers and prevent further damage to the substation.
He also said the outage was not linked to copper theft or recent reports of seismic activity circulating on social media.
NB Power said the remaining customers in the Lutes Mountain area had their power restored, according to a social media update posted just before 7 p.m.
