Emo Speedway, Rainy River Legion benefit from Northern Ontario Heritage Fund money

Two popular facilities in the Rainy River District are poised for upgrades.

Grants from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation will help pay for the work.

The Rainy River Legion is renovating its kitchen, bathroom and social areas to make them more efficient and accessible.

It is using a grant of $180,000 to cover the costs.

“On behalf of the Executive Committee and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Major Hughes Branch #54, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Honourable Greg Rickford MPP, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), and the Rainy River Future Development Corporation (RRFDC) for their generous support and for providing us with the opportunity to complete much-needed renovations and upgrades to our kitchen and club room washrooms,” states Heather Pilcher, the Legion’s First Vice President, in a release.

“These improvements will enhance our facility and help us continue providing a welcoming
and accessible space for our members and the broader community for years to come.

The Borderland Racing Association is receiving $108,000 for upgrades to the Emo Speedway.

It includes improvements to the washrooms, canteen, fencing, lighting and sound system.

“These investments will improve safety and the overall experience for our drivers, volunteers, fans and families, while helping ensure Emo Speedway continues to be a strong community attraction for years to come,” states Tammy Strachan, President of Borderland Racing.

Kenora-Rainy River MPP Greg Rickford visited both facilities while in the Rainy River District this week.

He says both have been places where generations of people have gathered, building connections and celebrating their communities.

“We’re proud to support these community assets with critical upgrades and modernization, ensuring both can continue to serve veterans, residents and visitors,” states Rickford.

“Through the NOHFC, we’re investing in the places that bring people together and build stronger, more vibrant communities across Northwestern Ontario.”
