Free radon tests available at N.B. libraries

New Brunswick libraries have begun distributing free radon testing kits for another year.

It’s a partnership that began in 2025 between the province and NB Lung and continues with the New Brunswick Research and Productivity Council.

What is radon, you ask? It’s an invisible, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock.

Radon gas can enter a home through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps around service pipes, floor drains and unsealed sump pits, and can impact a person’s health.

It’s estimated that one in four homes in New Brunswick has high radon levels.

Almost 12,000 kits were distributed to New Brunswickers last year.

The kits include information about radon gas and a long-term testing device that must be in the home for at least 91 days, and testing should be done during the colder months.

Test kit distribution will end in February next year.
