Ontario to continue lobby efforts for new trade deal with United States
Premier Doug Ford says he couldn’t be happier with the results of the mid-term elections in the United States.
The Democrats gained control of the House and Senate by strong majorities Tuesday night.
“It’s not just a victory for the people in the U.S. I think it’s a victory across the world and, most importantly, it’s a victory for the people of Canada because they played a strong role,” says Ford.
Ford refers to the lobbying efforts done in the fight for a fair trade agreement with the United States without tariffs.
Premiers, federal and provincial cabinet ministers, other elected officials and organizations made regular trips to the United States over the past year.
Ford is not prepared to lift his foot off the gas.
He says new tariffs to come into effect in the new year remain in place, and he has little trust in President Trump attempting to further disrupt trade between Canada and the U.S.
“So I’m directing our ministers, as soon as everyone gets sworn in, to go down to Washington, connect with the senators, the congresspeople, and of course I’ll be talking to the governors and seeing how we can move forward.”
No exact dates for those trips have yet been identified.
