‘Historic’: Successful test rocket launches from Canso, N.S.

About 100 people gathered in northeastern Nova Scotia, Wednesday, to witness what a local councillor calls, something historic.

Fin Armsworthy, alongside several other politicians and community members, was on hand in Canso to see a test rocket launch toward space.

“It made a great display of our community,” says Armsworthy in an interview with our newsroom.

The spaceport, run by Halifax company Maritime Launch Services, is a $200 million investment from the federal government that will eventually send satellites into space.

Armsworthy says it will be very beneficial to the economy.

“There’s never been anything like this in other places in Canada,” explains Armsworthy.

Visit from an astronaut

To make the day even more special, astronaut Jeremy Hanson was there.

Hanson was part of a crew of four who went on a 10-day mission to the moon and back in April. The first manned mission to the moon in over 50 years.

Armsworthy says he was shocked when he shook his hand.

“He says, ‘you got a nice community here. We hope there’s better things coming.'”

The second launch scheduled Wednesday was cancelled.

Maritime Launch Services says they are analyzing the data with their partners at T-Minus.
