Sign policies to get look over in Fort Frances
A request from a home-based business to erect a sign is resulting in a review of sign policies in Fort Frances.
A business owner wanted permission to place signs on town property to direct customers to their home.
Chief Building Officer John Burrows noted that they have received similar requests from other businesses, but it was the first time a home-based business sought approval.
When it came to council, the request was rejected as some members expressed concern about setting a precedent.
“There are probably multiple home-based businesses in our community and even some probably that we’re not really aware of,” says Councillor Wendy Brunetta.
“I’m concerned that if we do allow this application, we may get many, many more that clutter up our community with a lot of signs.”
“There are so many people with home-based businesses nowadays. I’m just concerned that it’s going to clutter up everything,” says Councillor Mike Behan.
Councillor John McTaggart also voiced opposition but noted the town had conflicting policies and by-laws that needed to be addressed.
“I think the administration needs to do some work in cleaning up some of the different policies and procedures,” expressed McTaggart.
Administration noted the discrepancies in its report to council.
It also identified a lack of a formal process for sign requests, which led to the request taking several months before reaching council.
“Administration has noted this and plans to define a more streamlined process during a comprehensive by-law review,” the report states.
