$2.325M worth of ‘Local Love’: United Way launches annual campaign

The United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick is hoping residents and businesses will show a little “Local Love” over the next 13 weeks.

The organization launched its annual fundraising campaign last week with a goal of $2.325 million.

CEO Mouna Gasmi admits it’s an ambitious target, but says it reflects the growing demand being felt by organizations providing services across the region.

“For me, though, it’s not just about reaching a number,” said Gasmi. “Every dollar represents our ability to invest back into local organizations and support people right here in Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick.”

This year’s campaign theme is Local Love, Ici avec Coeur, emphasizing the impact donations can have close to home.

“It’s about giving back to the community. It’s about investing here in our community,” Gasmi said. “It’s about helping our neighbours or helping our colleague that we don’t even know is struggling.”

Money is raised locally and stays in our communities

According to Gasmi, organizations working in areas including food security, mental health, housing and supports for children and youth are facing significant pressures.

“The demand is just getting higher while the resources are getting smaller,” she said.

The United Way works with local organizations to identify social challenges and direct funding where it can to help address community needs.

Gasmi describes the organization as both a connector and a convener, bringing people and organizations together to tackle issues affecting communities.

“We’re helping strengthen a network of local support rather than just addressing one issue,” she said.

Her message to residents is simple, “Find a way to be a part of it,” she said. “You can give, you can volunteer, get your workplace involved or come talk to us to build a stronger community where everyone belongs.”

The annual fundraising campaign runs for 13 weeks.

Businesses can get their workplaces involved, while individuals can make a donation or volunteer.

Gasmi said those interested in making a monetary contribution can donate through the United Way website, or they can also contact the organization by phone or email for assistance.
