District of St. Mary’s looking into a long-term pharmacy

The Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s is looking for expressions of interest for a new pharmacy.

Lesley McFarlane, Chief Administrative Officer for the District of St. Mary’s, says it’s to develop a location on 8164 Highway 7 long term but operated independently.

“We’re really open to what a developer would bring forward, and I think the big thing is range of services,” says McFarlane.

For years there was a pharmacy in Sherbrooke, however, as of October 2025 due to structural issues they switched locations to a mobile unit in a parking lot, temporarily.

McFarlane says they provide prescription services and some over the counter medications but there are gaps.

“They don’t have a full storefront or additional products that otherwise you have to travel to. Whether it’s Sheet Harbour, Antigonish, New Glasgow or Port Hawkesbury, to obtain,” explains McFarlane.

Whether the new pharmacy will be stand alone or in a mixed-use development, remains to be seen.

McFarland says there are lot of different ways it can be done.

“We’re really open to what a developer would bring forward, and I think the big things is the range of services,” adds McFarlane. “We don’t want to constrain anybody into what they might envision for what may be good economically and may be suitable.”

She says it’s important to note that they are taking and open and transparent process and following all aspects of the municipal government act.

“If there were any significant sale below value, then there’s a public hearing,” says McFarlane.
