New support for N.S. businesses affected by tariffs in steel, lumber sectors
New support for local workers and businesses affected by tariff and changes to global trade.
The province says $13.8 million from the federal government is being provided over three years through provincial programs that are available to export-related industries such as steel, softwood lumber, fisheries, seafood and agri-foods.
“This is about putting workers first,” said Nolan Young, Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration. “Global tariffs and market changes are creating uncertainty for some industries, and we’re stepping up to help. We’re making sure Nova Scotians have the training, support and opportunities they need to keep working, build new skills and move into new opportunities.”
Support includes:
– unemployed workers looking to gain skills for in-demand jobs
– expanding skill sets or more training for Work-Sharing Program agreements while hours are reduced
– employed workers who need new skills to stay competitive in companies affected by tariffs and global market shifts
The province says they will work with industry partners, sector councils and Ottawa to make sure programs are easy to access.
