Exploration looks at potential gold, copper, zinc find north of Fort Frances

There is some exploration activity underway north of Fort Frances.

Storm Exploration says it has kicked off work at its Gold Standard project.

A crew is on site, gathering further data on a 5-kilometre-long strip of land that has the potential to contain gold, copper and zinc.

It was identified during an airborne survey in 2024.

“The 2026 field program at Gold Standard promises to be exciting,” states Bruce Counts, President and Chief Executive Officer of Storm Exploration, in a release.

“We have identified a very large, compelling VMS (volcanogenic massive sulphide) target, which is potentially gold-rich, and this is the first time its mineral potential has been evaluated using modern exploration techniques and geological understanding.”

The company intends to conduct a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey over the property, providing it with a high-resolution digital terrain model.

Soil sampling and mapping are also scheduled over the next few weeks.

The company plans to drill this summer to help confirm the findings and evaluate the mineral potential.

The area was home to three historical gold mines that operated between 1901 and 1903, operated by the Rainy Lake Mining and Power Co. and the Gold Standard Mining Company.

Other exploration firms have studied the area since 1969.

Storm acquired the property in 2022.
