New superintendent named for Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park
A new park superintendent will be at Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota later this fall.
The National Park Service announced that Jennifer Onufer will take on the role.
She is currently the park manager at Lake Berryessa in California, but has previously served in leadership and supervisory roles at other NPS sites, such as San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park and Grand Canyon National Park.
“Jennifer brings an exceptional blend of leadership experience, operational skill, and commitment to partnerships,” states Pete Swisher, acting deputy director for the NPS’s Midwest Region, in a release.
“Her record of strengthening communication, improving visitor safety and enhancing resource protection will serve Voyageurs National Park and its communities well as she steps into this role.”
Onufer replaces Bob DeGros, who retired in 2025, ending a 36-year career with the National Park Service.
Brian Harmon, the park’s Head of Cultural and Natural Resources, has been serving as acting superintendent since.
“I am honoured to join the team at Voyageurs National Park and look forward to working with staff, partners and the local community to protect the park’s unique resources and enhance the visitor experience,” states Onufer.
“Throughout my career, I’ve seen the power of collaboration and innovation in preserving our public lands, and I’m excited to bring that spirit to Voyageurs.”
Onufer holds a master’s degree in resource management from Central Washington University and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Mercyhurst College.
