Treatment centre on Kingston Peninsula progressing

Work is progressing on a new substance abuse treatment centre on the Kingston Peninsula.

Expected to be operational this fall, the facility will open with 35 beds.

Operated by Edgewood Health Network, it will provide live-in treatment for people with complex substance abuse and behavioural addictions in various stages of recovery.

Justice Minister Robert McKee, also the minister responsible for addictions and mental health services, said people deserve timely care, appropriate treatment and hope for recovery.

“This facility will help expand access to treatment and move us closer to a system where there is a bed for anyone who wants one, when they want one,” he said in a statement.

McKee added the government is committed to working with the community to make sure the facility is safely and thoughtfully integrated, while providing the supports people need during their recovery.

There will be a phased approach to opening the centre, allowing for staff recruitment, onboarding, and time to establish a stable and supportive therapeutic community.

Another 15 beds will be added over the course of 2027.

Residents are expected to stay at the facility for four to six months for counselling, education and skills development.
