Antigonish’s hospital wins ENERGY STAR for its efficiency
An ENERGY STAR certification has been awarded to St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for their energy efficiency in 2025.
This makes it the second hospital in the province to receive the designation after Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg in May 2025.
Nova Scotia Health says St. Martha’s achieved a score of 93 out of 100, which means the hospital is 93 per cent more energy-efficient than similar buildings in Canada.
Earning this certification shows their strong commitment to reducing energy consumption, lowering operating costs and cutting greenhouse gas emissions.
Staff, physicians, government officials and community partners gathered at St. Martha’s to mark the achievement on Earth Day (April 22)..
“You’ve helped position this hospital, this community and Nova Scotia Health as leaders in something that matters to us all: building healthy communities and protecting our environment,” said Nova Scotia’s Minister of Health and Wellness and Antigonish MLA, the Honourable Michelle Thompson
Large facilities, such as hospitals consume significant amounts of energy, water and materials, and Nova Scotia Health makes ongoing efforts to improve energy management.
The hospital upgraded lighting and their heating, ventilation and air systems to improve both efficiency and patient comfort.
Nova Scotia Health’s environmental stewardship program has implemented energy savings projects cross the organization which reduces almost 37,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions and saves nearly $6.6 million annually.
