A workplace fatality at a poultry facility in the Annapolis Valley.
The Department of Labour tells us it happened overnight Wednesday in Glenmont.
Details remain few as the investigation continues.
The labour department says their thoughts and sympathies are with those affected.
Basketball Nova Scotia is sending a firm warning to spectators after a fight broke out at the U14 Provincial Club Championships.
Executive Director Lori Lancaster tells our newsroom in an email, it was at the Division 3 Gold Medal Game at Dartmouth High School, March 29.
“We have been told the altercation resulted from some back-and-forth discussions with opposing spectators,” says Lancaster.
The game was called with seven seconds left and did not continue.
“Very unfortunate for the young athletes competing.”
In a statement President Sarah MacEachern says championships are meant to celebrate hard work and passion and everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and respected.
“We want to be clear. Any form of abuse, aggression, or threatening behaviour at our events will not be tolerated,” reads the statement.
This is not the first time Basketball Nova Scotia came down hard on spectators.
Parents were banned from watching games for one weekend only in December 2023 due to officials receiving negativity from fans, coaches and players.
The organization asks for all members of the basketball community, especially, parents, guardians and spectators to be “mindful” of roles played.
Lancaster says, to her knowledge, no charges have been laid.
A stretch of downtown New Glasgow has been destroyed after a fire ripped through a row of historic buildings.
In a post on social media, the New Glasgow Fire Department says the blaze started Wednesday afternoon and lasted through until Thursday morning as crews put out hot spots.
“The loss of businesses and apartments will be felt for many years,” says the fire department.
It is unclear what started the fire but New Glasgow fire thanks neighbouring departments for their help.
Mayor Nancy Dicks says the town is deeply saddened by the devastating fire and extends sincere condolences.
“The businesses directly impacted include Zelda’s Flowers, Proud Pets and Twagy Vintage, all valued members of our downtown business community and wonderful downtown partners and friends,” says Dicks.
The tragedy, she says, also impacted 14 people who were tenants in the buildings.
In a statement on social media, Premier Tim Houston says the fire is a heartbreaking loss.
“I’m thinking of everyone impacted. A big thanks to first responders for all they did to get these fires under control to support the community,” says Houston.
Justice Minister Sean Fraser echoes Houston’s remarks saying there was “extraordinary damage” to the core of downtown New Glasgow and thanks first responders.
A wind farm in Antigonish County has been given the green light.
The province said an environmental assessment has been approved for the Eigg Mountain project.
It will bring 22 wind turbines near Connors Mountain Road that would produce up to 150 MW of energy and provide 250 jobs over 35 years.
“It will also reduce Nova Scotia’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by about 271,000 tonnes – the equivalent of taking more than 58,800 gas-powered cars off the road,” said the province.
The president of the Moose Conservation Association of Nova Scotia (MCANS) was on pins and needles waiting for the verdict.
The group had a meeting with Renewable Energy Systems (RES) – the company behind the project – Wednesday, in order for RES to explain the farm in more detail.
Al Muir said the meeting was cordial and learned Eigg Mountain was chosen primarily because of wind speeds, but they made clear how serious the situation is while delivering a strong message.
“[Thursday] the environment minister makes a decision on the project. He’s in effect the judge and jury of the fate of the moose up there. It’s our belief that if he accepts [it] he’ll become its executioner also,” said Muir.
In recent weeks, Muir had been desperately trying to put an end to the farm, concerned about detrimental effects to moose in the area.
He even went as far as to start a campaign, putting a face to the moose population, while pushing the public to write to Halman.
“This was a last-ditch urgent message we were trying to get out to the minister of the importance of this area,” explained Muir.
He said, he believed they were successful in getting the point across, but it came down to Halman who he called the “judge and jury”.
Now that the project has been approved, what the next steps from MCANS will be, remains unclear.
“I don’t know what could happen and there’s local people in the area that don’t want it there. Who knows what move they’ll make,” said Muir.
Meantime, Muir says RES did ask to meet again with MCANS regardless of the decision made, Thursday.
“We’ll decide our next course of action after we hear.”

The Department of Public Works says it is at the Pomquet interchange from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The work was supposed to be finished Thursday but will continue for a couple of hours one more day this week.
A Baddeck RCMP officer has been charged with uttering threats.
SiRT says the investigation started in February after a report the officer threatened a female he knows.
He was charged Wednesday and is expected in court April 13.
Acting Commanding Officer of the RCMP, Superintendent Dan Morrow says they take all allegations of misconduct seriously.
He says employees are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that exceeds high expectations of Canadians.
The officer is on leave and an investigation is ongoing.
A strike is looming for some staff at the University of King’s College in Halifax.
In a statement on their website, Vice President of King’s, Tim Currie says, the University of King’s College Teaching Association (UKCTA) indicated a strike could begin on Thursday at noon after conciliation talks failed, Tuesday.
The union represents the Faculty Fellows and Senior Fellows; a group of teaching assistants and markers in the school’s Foundation Year Program.
The Fellows alongside student supporters held a rally at the Quad Campus Tuesday.
Key sticking points include fair wages, a cap of class sizes and contract renewals.
Currie says classes will continue as scheduled until they hear otherwise.
“King’s remains committed to a respectful bargaining process and continues to hope that an agreement can still be reached,” says the statement. “Faculty Fellows and Senior Fellows make an important contribution to the Foundation Year Program, and our focus remains on supporting students and helping you complete the academic year successfully.”
He says more information will be provided when available.
There was a false sighting of the man wanted on a Canada Wide warrant at NSCC in Bridgewater.
Bridgewater Police say it was Wednesday morning when an officer was flagged down on High Street by a driver who believed they saw the man on the school’s campus.
Police notified staff, who followed safety protocols, but it was confirmed Latif Tag El Din was not at the location.
It was Monday afternoon when Bridgewater Police issued a statement that they were looking for Din. They had labelled him a “dangerous man”, which had many in town wondering why an emergency alert was not issued.
Mayor David Mitchell says even with the situation did not warrant an alert and he thanked police for how they handled the situation.
Din remains at large.
The future of one of the most iconic tourist destinations in the province remains uncertain two years after it closed, now that the cost of restoration has gone through the roof.
Parks Canada says it could cost anywhere between $11.6 million to $70 million for any work necessary on the Keltic Lodge in order for it to be used as a hotel.
It was in 2024 when the building shut down after it became too pricey to maintain the aging structure. It was estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars.
Now, the federal agency says decisions have still not been made about what will happen to the building, but they are in discussions with GolfNorth about it, who owns the lease.
“Both parties must be in agreement before any action is taken on the Main Lodge,” says Parks Canada in a news release.
In addition, a third-party is involved to look into possibilities for the main lodge and cottages. Electrical, heating systems, conduct repairs, accessibility requirements and other standards and codes would all need to be upgraded.
Despite the building being valued by the community, it did not meet requirements to be designated as a heritage building, according to the Federal Heritage Review Office.
However, other infrastructure work is now complete including a partial realignment to the Keltic In-Road and parking lot upgrades to the Middle Head Trail.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is now just one seat away from a majority government.
Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu of Sarnia-Lambton-Bkejwanong in Ontario has crossed the floor to the Liberals.
In a meeting with Carney this morning, Gladu told reporters she’s been watching Carney since he was elected and the big things he’s been driving.
“Nation building projects, diversifying our trade, bolstering our defense, plans to address criminality and build more homes,” said Gladu. “These are things Canadians want.”
With three by-elections on the horizon Monday, the Liberals now only need to win one of those seats to grab a narrow majority, bringing them to 172 seats in the House of Commons. The federal Conservatives now hold 140.
Carney said he is honoured to welcome Gladu and that she has tremendous experience in business as an engineer and ten years in parliament.
“We couldn’t be happier to have expertise, experience and energy coming to our team,” said Carney.
