Eastern Charlotte is one step closer to building its new multi-use childcare facility.
The municipality awarded the facility’s construction tender to Avant Garde Construction.
Council approved the nearly $2.4 million contract unanimously at a special council meeting last week.
In a press release, the municipality described the awarding of the tender as a significant milestone in the “municipality’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to quality childcare and enhancing community services throughout Eastern Charlotte.”
The contract approval follows the municipality securing additional provincial funds in late June to build the facility.
After discussions with the Regional Development Corporation, the provincial Crown corporation that supports communities and economic growth across government departments, the province agreed to contribute an additional $420,000, bringing its total investment in the project to $920,000, CAO Jason Gaudet told council at its June 29 meeting.

Council had initially decided to pause awarding the construction tender for the proposed St. George YMCA daycare in March after the province capped its funding at $500,000.
The earliest conception of the daycare dates to before the 2023 amalgamation, when, according to Gaudet, the provincial government approached the community about childcare needs highlighted in the 2023–26 Early Learning and Childcare Action Plan.
The cost of the project is estimated at about $2.9 million, with the federal government contributing $918,000 and the municipality’s partner, the YMCA of Southwestern New Brunswick, contributing $200,000.
Eastern Charlotte is transferring $400,00 from its capital reserves to invest in the project, but it still needs to raise about $500,000.
According to the release, construction of the project is expected to begin this fall, with the facility anticipated to open in late spring 2027.
The daycare is expected to have 82 spaces, including 52 childcare spaces for children ages one to five and 30 after-school spaces for children aged five to 12.
Mayor John Craig described the project in the release as “transformational investment for the municipality.”
“This is tremendous news not only for our young families, but for our entire community of Eastern Charlotte,” he said. “This project will strengthen our community, support working families, and help meet the growing demand for quality childcare for years to come.”
