The Yarmouth Mariners gained a single point on their weekend trip through Valley and Summerside.
That point was earned by a three-goal, third period comeback against the Western Capitals on Sunday afternoon.
Playing their third game in less than three days, the Mariners went down 4-1 early in the third, and it looked like the game was all but over.
But Ryan Small, Ewan Cleary and Thomas Dandurand all scored in a six-minute span to tie it at four.
Mariners goalie Brett Ruddy made a miraculous save at the end of regulation, and another one in overtime, he was named the game’s second star with 45 saves.
Eventually, Summerside would win 5-4 in a shootout, it was the first extra-time game for the Mariners this season.
Yarmouth shut-out Saturday
The Mariners couldn’t find the scoresheet on Saturday in Summerside, losing 4-0.
Chandler Bell took the loss in goal, he stopped 50 shots.
The Caps led 1-0 after the first, and 3-0 after the second, it was the first meeting of the season between the teams.
Yarmouth has not beaten the Caps in 21 straight games, that’s over a span of 952 days.
Their last win was in Game 2 of their first round series on March 17, 2024.
Good effort against league leaders
The Mariners began the road-trip on Friday night against the MHL-best Valley Wildcats.
Going into the game, Yarmouth had lost all three matchups with Valley this season.
The Mariners built a 3-2 lead after two periods, thanks to goals from Ryder MacQueen, Owen King and Reed Chafe.
After Valley tied it at four in the third period, the Mariners took a late penalty.
Felix Pronovost would score the game winner with three and a half minutes left, before an empty-netter sealed the 5-3 loss.
Brett Ruddy once again got second star honours with 45 saves.
Forward Ryan Small missed the game, but was back in for the two games against Summerside.
Yarmouth are also still missing veteran forward Jared Pitman, he’s out for an undetermined amount of time with injury.
Forward Evan Lyver, who had three goals and two assists in 14 games this season, has re-joined the Halifax McDonalds of the Nova Scotia U18 Major League.
He led the Macs in scoring last season.
