Police say that this type of incident is known as “swatting”; making a false report to police to prompt a significant response and tie up first responders. There have been a few in HRM within the last few months.
RCMP say on October 23, Truro police received information that a woman had reported being held hostage by three people who were armed on Tideview Drive.
However, when officers arrived on scene, the woman was safe at the home.
The woman had received a call from someone claiming to be from her bank about alleged fraudulent activity and asked her to download an app to her phone.
Before taking action, the woman was advised to call her bank directly. The caller then became agitated and told her there was a surprise at her door, which was a large police presence.
RCMP say they commend the victim for taking the time to verify the information and encourages others to do the same.
