NSFM spring conference in Yarmouth draws strong turnout, highlights local success
Municipal leaders from across the province gathered in Yarmouth for the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities spring conference, with local officials calling the event a strong success.
Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood says attendance exceeded expectations, with about 185 people taking part — well above the typical turnout of around 125.
She says hosting the event was an opportunity to showcase the community while also bringing economic activity to the area.
“It was just great to have them here,” she said, noting visitors were exploring the town and supporting local businesses.
The conference covered a wide range of topics, including tourism, culture and heritage, climate change, emergency management and municipal success stories.
Mood says those success stories are a key part of the event, giving communities the chance to learn from one another.
“The success stories are really helpful… we see something someone else can do,” she said.
Yarmouth itself was featured during the conference for its Communities in Bloom innovation work, which received strong feedback from attendees.
Provincial representatives were also in attendance, including cabinet ministers and senior officials, providing opportunities for direct conversations between municipalities and the province.
Mood says that access is an important part of the conference, allowing local leaders to raise concerns and discuss priorities face-to-face.
She says the event also highlighted the importance of ongoing learning for municipal leaders.
“We can’t be better at what we do for our citizens unless we have that information,” she said.
The spring conference rotates locations around the province, with Yarmouth hosting this year after a successful bid from local partners.
