Atikokan is under a boil water advisory.
The advisory went into effect on Tuesday following an unexpected shutdown of the town’s water system.
Mayor Rob Ferguson says the problem was pinpointed to the pumps used to feed water to the community.
“One pump, a motor went on it. Then we went to the secondary pump, and there was an electrical problem with the controls on it. So that went down. So we were on our emergency pump,” says Ferguson in an interview with Acadia News.
Ferguson says the town has plenty of water and town crews are working to get the main pumps going again.
He says if the emergency pump fails, they have a plan to get water to residents.
“If something did fail with the emergency pump, we do have a contingency to supply water to the town. We would not be without water for any length of time other than a few minutes, assures Ferguson.
Because of the pumping going down, a boil water advisory was issued as a precaution.
Ferguson expects it will remain in place until sometime next week.
