Council to discuss plans for Halifax Memorial Library this week

Council is scheduled to take another look this week at what the plan should be for the long-vacant Halifax Memorial Library

According to the agenda, Councillor Janet Steele will table a motion to direct the CAO to investigate possibly reusing the space and what options they may have for future use.

It was in July 2024 when council was going to hire a consultant to design a plan for the long-vacant library. Options included a public park.

In February, Friends of the Halifax Memorial Library tried to prevent the demolition of the building with a petition that garnered more than 2,000 signatures.

The library was built in 1951 and received heritage status in 2020.

The land once served as a burial ground for as many as 4,500 people and it’s believed Mi’kmaq ancestral remains are buried there too.

Council will be in session, Tuesday.
