Union president shares message of support for teachers before classes begin
The president of the Nova Scotia Teacher’s Union (NSTU) has a message of support for teachers just a couple of days before a new school year begins.
In a post on social media, Peter Day says although it’s an exciting time, there will be challenges and points to losing 80 specialist positions.
“[This] means fewer supports for students and additional pressure in our schools,” says Day.
It was in the spring when the province announced plans to eliminate 150 positions in the education department to meet a 3 per cent cost-saving measure mandated by the province.
At the time Day expressed concern saying it would cause real consequences.
In addition to the lack of staff, Day says school violence still remains a serious concern.
“While the code of conduct was a positive step, more staffing and resources are needed to make our schools safer,” explains Day.
The school code of conduct was revealed in April 2025 after several delays, and according to Day, the NSTU was consulted significantly on it.
“The NSTU will continue to advocate for the resources, supports, and working conditions you need to do your jobs effectively,” says Day.
