Attendance means success at school, education minister says

New Brunswick’s education minister wants parents and guardians to make school attendance a priority.

Claire Johnson said it will support their children’s success and long-term achievement.

And it’s not just about academics.

In a statement, Johnson said school is a place for children to form friendships, play outside, learn responsibility and gain life experience.

“There are so many reasons to show up,” the minister said.

“Students who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed and secure a brighter future.”

Johnson says families can help identify barriers to regular attendance and take steps to help students get to school.

That includes establishing consistent routines and maintaining open communication with teachers.

Research indicates absences can have significant consequences on a child’s education.

Missing two days a month, or 10 per cent of instructional time, is considered chronic absenteeism and equal four weeks of missed school in a year.
