This year marks a milestone for the Foundation, raising more than $1 billion for cancer research to date.
The Terry Fox Marathon of Hope began in St. John’s, Nfld., on Apr. 12, 1980. Terry ran the equivalent of a marathon a day for 143 days until he was forced to abandon the effort just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, on Sept. 1, 1980, 5,373 kilometres into his journey. The cancer had returned, this time in his lungs.
Terry died June 28, 1981, at the age of 22.
