Eagle River celebrates 40 years of community
The Recreation Centre in Eagle River was constructed over 40 years ago, and the community held a celebration to commemorate the event.
The We-R-Eager Club of 36 women was formed in 1979, and in 1981, their goal to renovate the old hall or build a new one was realized. Through extensive fundraising and assistance from the Municipality to secure grants, they raised $270,000, enabling construction to begin in 1985. The facility officially opened in April 1986. An ERECT Building Committee collaborated with the engineering company and the Municipality to complete the project. A shortfall of $48,377 was incurred, prompting community members and local businesses to contribute loans of up to $10,000, which were repaid by the We-R-Eager Club through their fundraising efforts. This exemplifies the community’s cohesion.
The Rec Centre was eventually owned by the Municipality and managed by the We-R-Eager Club until 2009. It continues to serve as the community’s focal point.
Fitness classes, pickleball, family nights, birthdays, parties, family gatherings, coffee houses and celebrations are held there. Approximately 90 people attended the event to support the cause and enjoy an evening of photographs, storytelling and camaraderie. Carolle Eady, Sharon Weberg and Carmene Hampe spent countless hours compiling binders of photographs over the years. Connie Calvert MC’d the event.
Mardi Plomp, who was embedded in the project, shared her perspective. Forrest Mann provided historical context regarding the railroad and our dam. Rod Campbell recounted the Municipality’s comprehensive involvement. Mayor Gord Griffiths shared fond memories of the Centre.
The success of this event is a testament to the collaborative efforts of volunteers. We extend our sincere gratitude to Carolle Eady, Pat Calvert, Kathy Pippy-Evans, Carmene and Bob Hampe, Daryn and Kristel Laminman, Lisa Durocher, Ursula Rhyner, Connie Calvert, Connie Korzinski, Jan and Claire Anderson, J.B. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who attended and generously contributed their food and time. Special thank you to Aimee Kroeker for making the Anniversary cake.
