Bay Village Coffee says suspected tip thief returns

Bay Village Coffee says it is dealing with a second alleged theft in less than two months.

According to owner Alan Forbes, a woman entered the business Thursday morning and allegedly took several items.

The café also alleges the woman threatened to smash the business’s windows after being confronted by staff.

Forbes claims the incident involved the same woman who was accused of stealing their tip jar in a viral incident this past September.

“She couldn’t care less. Didn’t run, didn’t hide her face. Just took what she wanted and strolled out,” the post reads.

According to Forbes, the woman had left before police arrived. He says they were advised to file an online report.

Speaking with Acadia News on Thursday, Forbes said he recognized the woman as the same person he believes was involved in the café’s tip jar theft earlier this year.

“I told her that she had to leave and she got angry. She took some cookies and she went to my cooler and started taking some drinks out of the cooler and she walked out,” Forbes said. “As calm as can be.”

Forbes said the incident left him feeling powerless.

“All I can do is stand there and watch. I can watch somebody steal from me. Just come in and take my property and walk out. And all I can do is watch,” he said. “This has sort of become normal now, and this is not right. Something’s got to change. Something’s got to give.”

In a Facebook post Thursday morning, Forbes voiced frustration over what he said was a recurring problem for the business.

“When she walks in next time — and she will — what exactly am I supposed to do?” Forbes wrote in a Facebook post. “Standing there watching it happen, knowing full well there’s effectively nothing I can do about it — that’s a terrible feeling, and I know I’m not the only small business owner in this city having it.”

The owner also questioned what they described as a lack of meaningful consequences for repeat offenders and raised concerns about the impact on small businesses.

In an October Facebook post, the owner said they confronted someone allegedly stealing from a vehicle in a neighbouring parking lot and believed it was the same person involved in the café’s earlier tip jar theft. The post also raised concerns about improperly discarded needles and other safety issues around the business.

Man allegedly stole $50k worth of items from stores: Halifax RCMP

A man from the Halifax area has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $50,000 worth of items from stores.

Halifax RCMP say they worked with liquor and building material stores in the area to identify the 55-year-old suspect from North Preston.

They say he was allegedly stealing things like alcohol, perfume, mugs, and construction tools, as well as using credit to fraudulently buy construction materials.

Officers searched a home on Simmonds Road on Tuesday and seized stolen goods estimated at more than $50,000 in value.

Police also seized a truck that they believe he was using to commit the thefts.

The man faces charges for theft over $5,000. He was released on conditions and will appear in court again later.

Theft charges laid against Sioux Lookout man

A Sioux Lookout man is facing theft charges.

Provincial Police say officers made an arrest after investigating a report of a stolen wallet from a vehicle on Front Street in Sioux Lookout.

It was also revealed that a credit card was used to make unauthorized purchases.

OPP say security camera footage helped officers identify a suspect.

The 30-year-old was arrested on charges of theft and obstructing a police officer.

He was later released and will make a court appearance in November.

RCMP seeking information about jewellery theft

Yarmouth Town RCMP are seeking information from the public about a jewellery theft on Aug. 3.

Investigators responded to a call at approximately 4:55 p.m. and learned that two men allegedly distracted a staff member to steal jewellery worth tens of thousands of dollars.

They say both men had dark hair and facial hair, and are approximately five feet 10 inches. 

One man was wearing glasses, a tan ball cap with a beer logo, and a Simpsons t-shirt, and is described as having a mole on the right side of his face.

The other man was wearing a black Guess t-shirt and a black Adidas ball cap.

RCMP are asking anyone with information to contact Yarmouth Town RCMP, or, to remain anonymous, Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.

Arichat man facing theft, fraud following multi-year commercial crime investigation

An Arichat man is facing fraud-related offences after a complex investigation into the alleged misappropriation and theft of trust funds.

Police say the 54-year-old has been charged with:

  • Fraud Over $5,000
  • Theft Over $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
  • Criminal Breach of Trust

According to the RCMP, the investigation named Project HUBRIS, started in January 2019 after multiple complaints against the man and his law firm.

It was extensive in scope with statements from more than 100 victims and witnesses in Canada and the United States and a search of the law office in September 2021.

According to the RCMP, “This process was completed in August 2024.”

The investigation continued with the help of forensics which helped investigators analyze financial records, evidence and “the review of thousands of documents and hours of victim testimony.”

The man is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court on October 26th.

Copper theft in New Brunswick up by 235%, Bell says

New Brunswick is one of the two provinces with the highest volume of copper thefts, according to Bell.

In a press release, the communications giant said New Brunswick and Ontario are the epicentres of the issue.

Between January and June of 2026, Bell recorded 993 incidents nationwide, representing a 78 per cent increase over the same period in 2025.

Ontario saw the highest number of cases at 579, while New Brunswick had 268, which the company said was a 235 per cent increase from 2025.

Bell said Quebec also saw a significant surge, with 91 incidents recorded so far this year, up 89 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The increase in theft is more acute in Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, Lanaudière and the Laurentians, said the communications company.

While metal theft has increased significantly, the telecommunications company noted that arrests have also risen by 32 per cent.

Particularly in Quebec, according to Bell, the province stands out for its enforcement efforts, with arrests up 150 per cent — one of the highest in the country.

Bell has also recently obtained a favorable court decision in Quebec related to copper theft, reinforcing the use of civil remedies to hold offenders accountable.

In the release, EVP and CFO Mark McDonald said the theft of copper can lead to service outages that can potentially endanger public safety, particularly by disrupting access to emergency services.

“No other organization can stop copper theft alone. It will take coordinated action from telecommunications providers, governments, law enforcement, recyclers and communities to hold criminals accountable and protect the networks Canadians depend on,” he added.

Bell said it’s taking a “multi-pronged approach” to help prevent copper theft and protect its network, including deploying alarms linked to law enforcement, increasing on-the-ground surveillance, working closely with police departments, and pursuing legal action against offenders.

The communications company said protecting “critical infrastructure is a shared responsibility,” and added that members of the public can also help by reporting suspicious activity near telecommunications infrastructure to local police or Crime Stoppers.

UPDATE: More bronze plaque thefts reported in Saint John, police say

Saint John police are investigating three additional thefts of memorial bronze plaques.

In an update shared in an email statement, Staff Sgt. Sean Rocca said similar incidents have been reported across the city over the past two weeks.

Saint John police first brought attention to this issue in a press release shared on July 24, in which they appealed for public assistance regarding the theft of plaques from a cemetery in the city’s east.

Rocca said cemetery staff have reported that approximately 15 plaques were stolen between July 17 and July 20.

“It has been learned through the investigation that most of the plaques are not from family gravesites, but were donated a hundred years ago by various organizations,” he added.

Roca said the other three incidents occurred in city parks.

He said on July 21, at approximately 8:28 p.m., officers received a report that a bronze plaque had been stolen from a park in the city’s north end. The plaque was first discovered missing on July 20.

Four days later, SJPF responded to a report of a man damaging a utility pole at the corner of Richmond and Prince Edward streets. A 37-year-old man was arrested for mischief and found in possession of bronze plaques believed to have been stolen from an uptown park.

Rocca said the man has since been released from custody and is expected to return to court for a later date for theft, possession of stolen property, and mischief.

The third incident occurred on July 27, when three plaques believed to have been stolen from another park and the exterior of an uptown church were turned over to police.

Rocca said all of the incidents remain under investigation. Patrol officers continue to conduct targeted patrols of cemeteries and parks throughout the city, day and night, while working alongside the major crime unit on the investigations.

Saint John police appeal for information in cemetery plaque thefts

The Saint John Police Force is seeking the public’s help investigating the theft of several bronze memorial plaques from a cemetery in the city’s east.

Saint John police are also asking residents to report any suspicious activity in and around cemeteries and monuments.

According to a news release, officers responded to a call on July 21 at 9 a.m. and learned several plaques had been stolen from monuments in the cemetery.

The release did not say how many plaques were stolen or identify the cemetery involved.

Acadia Broadcasting reached out to Saint John police for an update on the investigation, but Staff Sgt. Sean Rocca said in an emailed statement there is no significant update for public release.

He added that the Major Crime Unit continues to investigate.

Residents are asked to contact Saint John police at 506-648-3333 if they have information about the suspect or suspects, or about anyone attempting to sell the plaques.

Man charged after assaulting RCMP officer during stolen vehicle recovery

A man has been charged after Annapolis District RCMP say he assaulted a police officer and fled while officers were recovering two stolen vehicles.

It was on Friday, July 17, at around 7:45 in the morning when investigators found out that a van reported stolen was parked at a house on Highway 201 in Meadowvale. Officers say when they arrived and attempted to arrest the man, who was inside the vehicle, he assaulted one of the officers and tried to escape.

A woman who was also in the van at the time was arrested without incident.

Multiple RCMP teams came to support the investigation and assist with finding the man including Air Services, Police Dog Services (PDS), and a drone.

The man was eventually spotted hiding in a yard nearby before he ran into the woods. It was around 11:30 when PDS found him on Welton’s Lane and he was safely arrested.

The 43-year-old Upper Granville man is charged with seven offences, including Assaulting a Peace Officer, Resist Arrest (two counts), Possession of Property Obtained by Crime (two counts), and Failure to Comply with Release Order.

No officers involved reported any injuries, however, RCMP say the man was assessed at the hospital for an injury he had got during the arrest.

The man had his first court appearance on Monday, July 20, and will remain in custody while he waits for a future court date. The woman who was arrested was released by police, pending further investigation.

Officers say while they were on scene responding to the original report of a stolen vehicle, they found a second stolen motorcycle on the property. Both vehicles, a Dodge Grand Caravan and a Kawasaki KLX300 motorcycle, were seized and RCMP is working on finding the owners.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP.

Two charged after $10K theft spree at Halifax-area Sephora stores

A man and a woman are facing charges after Halifax Regional Police (HRP) say they stole more than $10,000 worth of products from multiple Sephora stores over a two-day period.

Officers say the first theft took place at the Mic Mac Mall location on July 19. The following day, the suspects allegedly targeted Sephora stores in Dartmouth Crossing and the Halifax Shopping Centre.

At approximately 4 p.m. on July 20, mall security contacted HRP after detaining the pair for theft. During the investigation, officers linked them to the other Sephora thefts.

The 23-year-old man and 22-year-old woman are scheduled to appear in Halifax provincial court at a later date to face charges.
