Williams Lake dam upgrades begin, work to continue through summer

Residents around Williams Lake may notice changes in water levels in the coming weeks, as work officially gets underway on the Williams Lake Dam project, with construction expected to continue throughout the summer.

In a social media update, MLA Brendan Maguire said the original dam has been serving the community since the 1870s, and crews will be repairing its aging rock foundation. This will include installation of a temporary diversion channel, and the new construction will have a passage for fish. He also says final landscaping and vegetation restoration will be added after the main work is complete.

Maguire mentions that Build Nova Scotia has been working closely with community representatives and residents to ensure the work is carried out safely and responsibly.

While there will be periods of increased activity, including construction noise from equipment, drilling, and grouting operations, Maguire assures that Build Nova Scotia and project contractor Dexter Construction will continue to follow standard work-hour and noise-management protocols.

He says, as with any infrastructure project, timelines may change due to unforeseen conditions, such as additional rock fracturing identified during excavation or significant weather events. Requirements related to in-water work may also result in some activities being delayed if needed.
